Malaysian officials confirm on March 10, 2014, that military radar data shows an unidentified aircraft—now assessed to be Malaysia Airlines Flight 370—turning back from its planned route.
According to the Royal Malaysian Air Force, radar records indicate that an aircraft crosses the Malay Peninsula and continues westward over the Andaman Sea after losing contact with civilian air traffic control. The radar information is reviewed following the initial disappearance report.
Officials state that the aircraft is not intercepted, as it does not appear to pose an immediate threat. At the time of the flight, the aircraft’s transponder is no longer transmitting, limiting identification through standard civilian tracking systems.
The confirmation marks a significant development, suggesting the aircraft deviates substantially from its intended path. Authorities caution that the radar data does not explain why the deviation occurs or where the aircraft ultimately goes.
Search planning begins adjusting to account for the newly acknowledged information.
